Male Pattern Baldness
95% of males will experience pattern hair loss during their lives
What is Male Pattern Baldness?
Hair loss begins at the front, temporal sides of the head, leaving a triangular block of hair at the centre of the scalp. After a small to moderate amount of hair loss occurs, balding temples with greater hair loss at the crown follows.
What happens when you have Male Pattern Hair Loss ?
Male Pattern Baldness (MPB), medically known as Androgenetic Alopecia, is the most common type of hair loss in men.
It's a genetic condition that follows a predictable pattern of hair recession and thinning, typically driven by hormonal changes and genetic predisposition.
Male Pattern Baldness isn't just a physical condition can significantly impact self-esteem, may cause anxiety and social confidence issues and it’s a potential trigger for depression in some individuals.
How does male pattern baldeness affect the hair?
As shown on the Hamilton scale above, pattern hair loss begins slowly. With men starting at the crown and/or hairline then heading slowly backwards.
The Hamilton Scale classifies MPB progression:
Early Stage (Type II
-Slight recession of hairline, typically at the temples
-Minimal hair loss, often unnoticeable to others
Moderate Stage (Type III-V):
-Deeper recession at the temples
-Visible thinning at the crown
-Formation of a "bridge" of hair separating balding areas
Advanced Stage (Type VI-VII):
- Extensive hair loss
-Minimal hair remaining on top of the head
-Horseshoe-shaped hair pattern around the sides and back of the head):
What causes male pattern baldness?
Male Pattern Baldness is caused by a number of possible factors. The primary culprit behind MPB is dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a powerful derivative of testosterone.
Here's how it works:
Genetic Sensitivity: Some men have hair follicles that are genetically more sensitive to DHT
Follicle Miniaturisation: DHT causes hair follicles to shrink progressively
Shortened Growth Cycle: Affected follicles produce progressively shorter, thinner hair
Several factors can accelerate or influence Male Pattern Baldness:
- Family history of baldness
- Age (most common between 25-50)
- High testosterone levels
- Certain medical conditions
- Medications
- Stress
- Poor nutrition
The top three causes of male pattern baldness are:
- Genetically inherited (maternal grandfather)
- Sensitivity to androgen
- Age related.
