Psoriasis

Psoriasis is an uncomfortable scalp condition

Psoriasis is a skin condition that causes red, itchy areas on the scalp with silvery scales of skin that shed. Scalp psoriasis is a form of plaque psoriasis.

 What is Psoriasis?

The condition (plaques) can spread to the edges of the scalp and onto your forehead, neck and ears. This condition can become extremely itchy and uncomfortable. Psoriasis generally leaves the area feeling 'tight' and uncomfortable.

What happens when you have Psoriasis

Psoriasis looks like silvery, scales on the surface of the skin. The scales on the scalp are generally thick and firmly adhered to it. The affected area outlined with a darker, red margin of skin leaving the adjacent skin with a 'normal' appearance.

Some Psoriasis sufferers have the condition in other areas of the body, such as the elbows, knees and shins, usually developing the condition between puberty and thirty.

What Causes Psoriasis?

The precise cause of psoriasis is unknown.  We are certain that it is hereditary and that stressful situations, illness and certain medication can trigger psoriasis.

Scalp psoriasis is thought to be an auto-immune response that leads to skin cells multiplying more rapidly and causing an excessive build-up on the skin surface as they do not shed at the same speed.

In healthy skin, normal skin cell growth/division works in harmony with the speed that skin cells shed; thus the skin remains smooth, even and hydrated.  Psoriatic skin appears rough, elevated and parched.

This is because the rapid rate of skin cell growth/division (5 times greater) is out of sync with the rate at which it is being shed, allowing these cells to remain and form thick patches.

Who can be affected by Psoriasis

Psoriasis sometimes improves spontaneously during and after childbirth and at menopause.

This condition can only be managed and psoriasis can enter remission of its own accord.

However, when we consider stress to be major triggering factor, it is understandable how tricky it is to keep at bay.

How is Psoriasis treated?

At TrichoSynergy, we will treat your scalp with trichological preparations containing cade oil and salicylic acid.  UV light is also used as this condition responds excellently with its healing properties.

The scalp clears very well with this treatment as scale and plaque is lifted and scalp tightness relived. The key is to have regular, appropriate treatment which should alleviate the symptoms.
